Tommaso Ragno
Tommaso Ragno, born in Vieste—yeah, that beautiful little seaside town down in Foggia—ended up moving north to Piacenza as a toddler. His folks? Mostly Apulian, but there’s a dash of ex-Yugoslavian from his grandmother’s side. He grew up quiet, a bit of a bookworm, dreaming about writing, locking himself away with novels. But, plot twist—he ditches the writing plans and heads off to Milan to study acting at the Paolo Grassi School. He even spent a chunk of his life soaking up the Berlin vibe before landing in Rome, where he weathered the infamous lockdowns.
His stage debut dropped in ’88, tackling Greek tragedy with Mario Martone. The ‘90s? Constantly teaming up with Carlo Checci, who he swears is his “greatest teacher.” Movies came calling in 1997 with We All Fall Down, then leads in Chimera, and, just flexing, acting opposite Isabelle Huppert in Medea Miracle. He kept busy: The Council of Egypt, Me and You, Like Crazy, Bloody Richard—he’s all over the place. 2018 was wild: Happy as Lazzaro, which scooped up awards at Cannes, and got him a CinEuphoria nod.
Recent highlights? Three Floors with Nanni Moretti and Paolo Virzì’s Dry, both shot right before everything shut down. 2022 was a big one—he snagged the Nastro d’Argento for Best Supporting Actor in Nostalgia. TV’s been steady too, with leads in Distretto di polizia, Il tredicesimo apostolo, and narrating classics on Rai Radio 3. Oh, and don’t forget his turn as Donatello Fadda—the Italian mob boss—in Fargo’s fourth season. The man just doesn’t slow down.
