Zygi Kamasa
Zygi Kamasa’s one of those names that pops up everywhere in the UK film scene – kind of like the guy behind the curtain making everything happen. He kicked things off back in ’93, launching Scorpio Productions, messing around with TV before jumping headfirst into movies. Then, in ’98, he and Simon Franks started Redbus Film, which Lionsgate snapped up for a cool $35 million in 2005. After that? Zygi basically ran the show at Lionsgate UK and Europe for over 15 years, dropping hits like The Hunger Games, The Expendables, La La Land, Magic Mike, and John Wick into cinemas. Not exactly a bad run.
But he didn’t just chase box office gold. He put his weight behind a ton of British indie projects, getting more than 50 homegrown films off the ground. We’re talking awards contenders like Brooklyn with Saoirse Ronan, and crowd-pleasers like Bend It Like Beckham and Eddie The Eagle. Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt – all in the mix. Zygi’s been everywhere, quietly backing talent and making sure British stories got their shot.
2020 rolls around, and he hooks up with Matthew Vaughn at Marv Studios, executive-producing stuff like Tetris with Taron Egerton (Apple TV+ snapped it up quick) and Vaughn’s flashy Argylle, loaded with stars and dropping through Universal and Apple in 2024. By 2023, Zygi dials in even harder on the UK, founding True Brit Entertainment to laser-focus on financing, supporting, and distributing British indie flicks. Guy’s not slowing down anytime soon.
