Sept. 27 — Ryan McMahon hit a five-run double in the eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Reds 10-8 on Thursday at Denver Finch (St. Louis Cardinals).

Charlie Blackmon drove in three runs for Colorado after Cardinals reliever Ryan Fernandez (1-6) struck out the first two batters of the eighth inning as the Colorado team began to fight back.

With Colorado trailing 8-5, Jake Cave tripled to lead off Aaron Shank’s second single of the day. Blackmon walked to load the bases and Ezequiel Tovar hit a double to tie the game.

Kyle Leahy took the mound and McMahon hit a two-run single on the first pitch, scoring Tovar. Michael Toglia ended the game with an RBI double to center field off Wall.

Tolia had three hits, and McMahon, Tovar, Cave and Shank had two hits each. Angel Chivilli (2-3) got the win despite giving up two runs in his only relief inning. Seth Halvorson earned his second save for the Rockies (61-98).

Colorado starter Kyle Freeland didn’t suffer a loss in his return, giving up six runs on eight hits, four of them earned, in 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four.

St. Louis starter Kyle Gibson gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits in four innings. He struck out five batters and walked three.

Lars Nootbaar and Paul Goldschmidt hit back-to-back home runs, and Ivan Herrera and Pedro Pages also drove deep for the Cardinals (81-81). Nootbaar, Jordan Walker and Victor Scott II each had two hits for St. Louis.

Nootbaar and Goldschmidt hit two consecutive home runs in the first inning to give the Cardinals a 2–0 lead. It was Nootbaar’s 11th home run of the season and Goldschmidt’s 22nd.

Colorado scored in the bottom of the inning on Taulia’s RBI single and answered with a single and a run-scoring double by Nolan Jones.

St. Louis scored again on the second possession. Scott hit a single and scored when Jones accidentally hit Maxine Wynn on a breakaway to left. Nootbaar led off with a double off Winn and Goldschmidt’s second error of the inning allowed Nootbaar to score, making the score 5–2.

Blackmon hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, his 12th, and tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Herrera’s solo homer, his fifth of the season, gave the Cardinals a 6–5 lead in the fifth inning, and Paige’s two-run hit in the eighth was his seventh home run, his first of the year, tied the score at 8–5.
