Reese Witherspoon
Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon popped into the world on March 22, 1976, down in New Orleans. Her mom, Betty, worked as a nurse, and her dad, John, was a military surgeon—so, yeah, sort of intense. Thanks to her dad’s Army gig, Reese actually spent her toddler years over in Wiesbaden, Germany. Didn’t last long, though; the fam landed back in the States and settled in Nashville, Tennessee.
She wasn’t exactly a stranger to the spotlight—by age seven, she’d already started modeling and popping up in local TV commercials. Not your average elementary schooler, right? By eleven, she’d snagged first place at a Ten-State Talent Fair. Not too shabby.
Reese’s big break came in 1991 with “The Man in the Moon,” playing a 14-year-old tomboy and totally nailing it according to critics. Pretty soon, she grabbed roles in “Jack the Bear” and “A Far Off Place,” both in ’93. After graduating from Harpeth Hall (yeah, a fancy all-girls school), she gave Stanford a shot, majoring in English lit. But Hollywood came calling—she bailed on college when film offers got too good to ignore. “Fear” with Mark Wahlberg and “Freeway” with Kiefer Sutherland weren’t exactly blockbusters, but they got her noticed.
The late ’90s saw her in “Pleasantville,” “Election,” and “Cruel Intentions”—all cult favorites now. But “Legally Blonde” in 2001? That’s when Reese went full superstar. Then “Sweet Home Alabama” blew up the box office. Fast forward, she bags an Oscar for “Walk the Line,” nails more rom-coms, and even gets her own star on the Walk of Fame. By 2014, she’s producing hits like “Gone Girl” and “Wild,” snagging another Oscar nod. She’s been everywhere, honestly.
