David Hewlett
David Hewlett’s one of those rare folks who never really grew out of being a science geek. As a kid, he was both terrified and obsessed with Doctor Who (because, I mean, who wasn’t?), and for a while, he figured he’d grow up to be a Time Lord. Reality check: he landed in acting, which honestly is probably more fun anyway. He’s married to Jane Loughman—she’s got enough awards to need a bigger shelf, and she’s just as sharp as she is charming. But David’s not just about red carpets and scripts. He built TechBandits.org—a wild, curiosity-fueled club for kids that mashes together science, tech, engineering, arts, and math. You’ll find him running sessions on YouTube, Twitch, and even showing up at local schools, making sure kids actually enjoy learning for a change.
David’s got a real thing for assistive tech, too. He teamed up with Lance Carr (a guy who’s basically the cool older cousin of the gaming world) and Google to launch GameFace—an AI-driven head-tracking mouse, which made its debut at GoogleIO 2023. He’s also deep into educational escape room design with the University of Toronto, because why not make learning feel like solving a mystery? When he’s not inventing or acting, he’s out there talking at conferences and popping up on podcasts, trying to light that spark in the next batch of curious, brave, and downright kind trailblazers.
