Lady Gaga always makes a statement. Whether she’s wearing a voluminous McQueen gown, a flesh-toned jumpsuit, a pink cowboy hat, or old Hollywood feathers, you can always count on Mommy Monster to bring the fashion drama to the red carpet. So it’s no surprise that in her new chapter as a leading lady in Hollywood, she’s continued her love of statement dressing. Tonight in London, the superstar (and Awesome cover girl) attended the premiere of Joker: Pas de Deux, in which she plays Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. Naturally, she’s fully embraced the red carpet approach.

Gaga adds her name to the list of stars who have recently created film roles through their fashion choices. (Margot Robbie’s Barbie look is perhaps the most prominent example of the Method sartorial movement, and Jenna Ortega did the same thing while promoting Beetlejuice.) Now, Gaga is doing the same for the Joker: She wears a bright red dress, reminiscent of Harley Quinn’s signature color (though in the new film, Quinn’s name has been changed to Lee Quinzel).

Gaga’s sculptural bolero coat and wide sweetheart gown were custom-made by Celine and accessorized with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, including brooches, earrings and rings. However, her bold hair and makeup really made her fit the character. Both the Joker and Harley wear straight-haired wigs in black and red (worn by Frederic Aspiras, reminiscent of the wig he wore on the cover of Esquim magazine) and electric blue makeup, illustrated by a teardrop (played by Sarah Dano).

Accompanied by her co-star Phoenix and fiancé Michael Polansky, she looked like a real movie star—but not in the traditional sense. If there’s one thing Gaga is going to do, it’s make her glamorous look a little weird. We’re back: raise your paws!
