Alex Macqueen

Born in ’74 out in Epsom, Surrey, Alex Macqueen’s got one of those faces you’ve absolutely seen, even if you can’t quite place him. Back in the ‘90s, while most of us were figuring out dial-up, he was already strutting his stuff in the National Youth Theatre. Dude even managed to squeeze in English at Durham and then International Relations at Pembroke, Cambridge. Not bad, right? He’s probably best known for being the perfectly infuriating Julius Nicholson in ‘The Thick of It’—basically, he nails that smug policy wonk vibe—or as Neil’s awkward, well-meaning dad in ‘The Inbetweeners’. The guy’s worked with some serious heavyweights: Woody Allen, Kenneth Branagh, Bryan Singer, Armando Iannucci, Richard Curtis… you name it. In 2011, Shane Meadows picked him up for ‘This Is England 88’, and then in 2012 he went full weirdo genius in ‘Hunderby’ on Sky Atlantic, completely holding his own opposite Julia Davis. And for the Whovians out there—yeah, he’s your new Master in the Doctor Who audios from Big Finish. He’s done his fair share of film too. ‘The Hide’—a tight little psychological thriller—got rave reviews for its low-key intensity. Shot over just ten days, mostly in a bird-watching hut of all places, it’s a tense, clever watch. Comedy fans will recognize him from drop-ins on ‘Peep Show’, ‘Pulling’, ‘Lead Balloon’, and ‘The IT Crowd’. Oh, and don’t forget his long stint as the deeply sarcastic Dr Keith Greene in ‘Holby City’. Basically, if you’re into British TV, you’ve seen Macqueen work his magic.

    • Trivia:

Kinda wild bit of trivia, actually—so, Neil’s dad in The Inbetweeners? Yeah, the guy who plays him is only eleven years older than Blake Harrison, who plays Neil. That’s barely a decade! You’d think they’d have picked someone with a little more of a generational gap, but nope, that’s British TV for you. Simon Greenall just rocked up and nailed the “embarrassing dad” vibe, despite being basically the same age group as the lads. He kept up the act not just for the series, but also all the way through both The Inbetweeners Movie and the sequel. It’s kinda funny when you realize they probably could’ve gone out for a pint together rather than doing the whole father-son routine. Goes to show, with the right makeup and attitude, age really is just a number in the acting world.
