Alex Winkler
Alex Winkler’s got a pretty wild ride under his belt, honestly. He’s not your run-of-the-mill film composer—he’s one of those music chameleons who can slide from classical piano to pop or jazz without blinking. Started off tearing it up as a pianist, then jumped ship to LA in 2017 for that fancy USC screen scoring master’s. Guess it paid off, ‘cause since then, he’s stacked up a mountain of film credits. You’ve probably caught his work in “Molli And Max In the Future” (which had its moment at SXSW 2023), or got spooked by his music in the Korean horror flick “Dawning.” He’s got range, man. There’s more—he did the score for “The Girl Who Left Home,” a musical dramedy, and even cooked up tunes for Hulu’s “Bite Size Halloween.” Plus, he’s teamed up with horror director Julian Terry, scoring shorts like “The Nurse” (yep, the one from New Line Cinema), “Whisper,” “They Hear It,” and “Don’t Peek.”
But he’s not just about movies—he’s also half of the duo Kathulu Lemon, cranking out original tracks and music videos, and he plays piano on jazz fusion records with Glenious Inner Planet. People have started to notice, too—ASCAP gave him a nod as a “Composer to Watch,” and his score for “What Daphne Saw” snagged Best Score at the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival. Not bad for a guy who started out jamming on the piano.
