Ayfer Feray

Ayfer Feray, born way back in Izmir in ’28, was one of those faces you just couldn’t miss on the Turkish stage and screen. Seriously, she had this vibe—old-school glam but still approachable, like someone’s favorite aunt who just happened to be a total legend. She started out in local theater (Izmir’s got a bit of a scene, don’t let anyone tell you different), but she really blew up when she made the jump to film in the early ‘50s. One of her earlier films, “Bergama Sevdaları” (1952), threw her straight into the spotlight. People couldn’t get enough. Jump ahead a decade or so, and she’s starring in “Yahya Peygamber” in ’65, a movie that took some guts to pull off given the religious themes—Turkey wasn’t exactly known for subtlety back then. Feray, though? She handled it with the sort of grace that made you forget you were watching a movie at all. The following year, she showed up in “Silahların Kanunu” (1966), flipping the script and showing off her range. She could do drama, sure, but she could also bring this grounded energy, like she’d seen it all and was just letting you in on the secret. Feray’s career spanned decades, and no matter what the role—tragic, comedic, or somewhere in between—she made it feel real. She kept going until the ’90s, finally passing away in Bodrum in ’94. Even now, folks who know Turkish cinema still drop her name, like a badge of honor. She wasn’t just an actress—she was a whole era.
