Chayse Irvin
Chayse Irvin? Yeah, he's that Canadian-American cinematographer with a wild eye for visuals—seriously, the guy’s got style for days. People mostly know him for his work with Kahlil Joseph, who’s not just a director but some kind of artist-genius, and when these two link up, you can just expect something off-the-wall. Chayse kicked off his feature film career with “Medeas” back in 2013, which, no big deal, snagged him the Best Cinematography Debut at Camerimage. That’s like winning the Oscars for camera nerds.
Then things got really interesting. He started teaming up with Kahlil on all sorts of experimental stuff, which basically snowballed into working on Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” in 2016. You know “Lemonade”—that visual album that everyone and their grandma was talking about. Chayse helped make that look like pure magic.
2017 was basically his power year. He grabbed a Gold at the Cannes Lions for Sampha’s “Process” and didn’t stop there—picked up Silver for that John Malkovich x Squarespace thing, plus a Bronze for Apple Watch’s “Go Time.” The guy doesn’t sleep, apparently. Oh, and he shot Andrea Poloraro’s “Hannah,” which scooped up Best Actress for Charlotte Rampling at Venice and then Silver Hugo for Best Cinematography at Chicago. Wild.
Nowadays, Chayse hangs his hat in Brooklyn, repping the Canadian Society of Cinematographers. Always hustling, always making stuff nobody else even tries.
