Donnie Yen, born in Guangzhou, China, grew up surrounded by martial arts and music—his mom, Bow-sim Mark, was a legit kung fu legend, while his dad juggled journalism and music on the side. When Donnie was just a toddler, the family pulled up stakes for Hong Kong, and then Boston by the time he hit 11. Stateside, his mom basically kicked off the Chinese martial arts scene in America, and guess who got drafted into that world from a crazy young age? Yep—Donnie. But it wasn’t all punches and kicks; his parents’ love for music got him pounding piano keys, too. Honestly, teenage Donnie wasn’t about following rules. His parents, not thrilled with that, shipped him off to Beijing’s top Wu Shu academy. On his way back to the States, he swung by Hong Kong and crossed paths with Yuen Woo-ping, the martial arts film director who’d change everything. Donnie’s first big movie, 'Drunken Tai Chi,' blasted him onto the Hong Kong action scene. Soon after, he started showing off his breakdancing moves in 'Mismatched Couples,' and then got snapped up for cop thrillers like 'Tiger Cage.' He pretty much invented his own flavor of screen fighting—mixing fast kicks, boxing, and grappling. Later, he squared off with Jet Li in 'Once Upon A Time In China 2,' snagged his first acting award nod, and kept building his legend with roles in classics like 'Iron Monkey.'

When I was acting, every time I watched a director or a choreographer work, my brain would just light up with ideas. Like—why not do it faster, sharper, better? Why does one movie pop and the other just flop, even if they’ve got the same cash to burn? There’s gotta be a trick, a method behind it all. When I was working action with Yuen Woo Ping, I’d constantly throw ideas at the team, bugging everyone from the cameraman to Yuen himself. “Hey, what if we do it like this?
