Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle Union grew up bouncing from Omaha, Nebraska, to the sunny suburbs of Pleasanton, California. Her mom, Theresa, ran things at the phone company, and her dad, Sylvester, did the whole military and business exec thing—pretty classic ‘90s family vibes. Gabby was that kid who just didn’t stop moving: soccer, basketball, track, you name it, she did it. Star point guard at Foothill High, class of ’91, already killing it before most people figure out how to tie their shoes.
After high school, she hit up the University of Nebraska to play soccer, switched over to Cuesta College for a bit, and finally landed at UCLA. Law school was the plan—she was just trying to be normal, really. Then, out of nowhere, a college internship at a modeling agency in LA totally changed her life. She figured it was an easy way to grab some credits and pay off those lovely student loans, but as it turns out, the agency spotted something else. They asked her if she wanted to try modeling for real. Why not, right? Bills don’t pay themselves.
Then, the real twist: she auditioned for Saved by the Bell—didn’t even have headshots, just walked in and nailed it. From there, Gabby picked up a bunch of cool movie and TV roles, popping up all over the place before landing a main gig as Dr. Courtney Ellis in CBS’s City of Angels. She’s never really played the wallflower, always going for characters with bite. And she’s not shy about saying Hollywood still needs to open its eyes to all shades of Black beauty. Oh, and she wrapped up UCLA with honors in sociology, so, yeah—brains and hustle.
