Catweazle (2021) brings a wild blend of magic, mishaps, and straight-up chaos, all wrapped up in a family-friendly adventure. So, here’s this oddball wizard from the Middle Ages—Catweazle, the type who probably thinks WiFi is some kind of demon. Thanks to a botched spell (because, obviously, spells never go right in these things), he gets zapped from his own time and plopped right into the 21st century. Dude’s got a beard that would make Gandalf jealous, but zero clue how anything works in our world—forget smartphones, he loses it over a light switch.
He bumps into Benny, a teenager who’s already juggling enough weirdness in his own life, and now has to play babysitter to a full-grown medieval sorcerer who talks to frogs and is obsessed with electricity (which he calls “elektrickery”). These two—total opposites—get stuck together, dodging suspicious adults, bumbling through modern tech, and trying to keep Catweazle’s identity under wraps. It’s a mess, but honestly, you can’t look away.
What makes the whole thing tick is that mix of slapstick comedy and a bit of heart. Catweazle’s confusion is hilarious, but you kinda root for him as he tries to find his way home. Meanwhile, Benny learns a thing or two about sticking up for someone—even when that someone is a time-traveling wizard who thinks elevators are portals to hell. It’s a fish-out-of-water story with a magical twist, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Just a blast from start to finish.
