James Van Der Beek
James Van Der Beek, born in Cheshire, Connecticut back in ’77, kinda grew up with the arts running through his veins—his mom was a Broadway dancer and ran a gymnastics studio, while his dad did the business thing, working for a cell phone company. He’s the oldest of three, with a younger brother Jared and a sister Juliana. Weird twist: James only got into acting because he got benched from football after a concussion at 13. No more sports, so he tried out for his school play and landed the lead in “Grease.” Guess that lit the fire, because after that he spent his teen years bouncing around local theater productions.
When he hit sixteen, he and his mom took a shot at the big leagues and went to New York to chase an agent and auditions. It paid off—he snagged a part in an off-Broadway play called “Finding the Sun.” More stage work followed, and by 1994, he was juggling theater with classes at Drew University, majoring in English and minoring in sociology. Acting didn’t exactly explode for him right away. He had tiny roles in flicks like “Angus” and “I Love You, I Love You Not,” but nothing major. Kinda stalled out for a bit, so he focused on college, even made the Dean’s list. College life got dull, though, so he took a break, did some traveling, and when he came back, he auditioned for “Dawson’s Creek.” Nailed the role, and that show blew up, changing everything for him. Since then, he’s popped up in movies like “Varsity Blues” and “Texas Rangers,” but he still plans on finishing his degree eventually.
