Jason Buxton
Jason Buxton’s got one of those stories that just makes you nod and think, “Yup, this guy gets it.” Born bouncing between the UK and Canada, he’s landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and honestly, he’s been knocking it out of the park ever since. His first movie, BLACKBIRD, wasn’t just some debut that fizzled away quietly. Nope—he dropped it at TIFF back in 2012, and critics lost their minds (in a good way). It snatched the Best First Feature Award, landed two Canadian Screen Award nominations, and even scooped up the Claude Jutra Award for Best Canadian Feature Film debut. If that wasn’t enough, it turned heads at Cannes the next year, bagging the Grand Prix at Ecrans Junior. Not exactly your average rookie run.
Fast-forward—Buxton doesn’t slow down. His second feature, SHARP CORNER, stars Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders (so, yeah, he’s working with some serious talent). It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival—big deal, right?—then hopped over to the Rome Film Festival for its international debut. Now it’s set to hit theaters in the U.S. and Canada on May 9, 2025, which basically means people are about to talk about this one a lot more.
Oh, and side note: Buxton’s got dual citizenship with the UK and Canada, so he can basically hop on a plane whenever inspiration hits. Not a bad gig.
