Jessica Hynes

Jessica Hynes, honestly, has done a bit of everything—acting, writing, the whole shebang. Born in Lewisham back in ’72, but raised by the seaside in Brighton, she was always that kid scribbling out wild sci-fi stories while the other kids were, I dunno, doing normal stuff. By 15, she’d already joined the National Youth Theatre, and by 18 she’d flown the coop, off to London chasing acting gigs and trying her hand at comedy. She started out doing theatre, running into Katy Carmichael (you know, “Twist” from Spaced), and the two of them ended up on the sketch show Six Pairs of Pants alongside Simon Pegg. Simon, being the legend he is, pulled her into Asylum, which Edgar Wright directed. That group just clicked—so much so, Jessica and Simon decided to write their own sitcom. That’s how Spaced was born. It’s this hilarious, weird little show about a group of misfit twenty-somethings just sort of muddling through life in North London. Edgar Wright came on to direct, and they shot the first series while Jessica was pregnant, which is just kinda badass. Spaced blew up, got a second series, and suddenly Jessica was winning British Comedy Awards left and right. She even snagged an Olivier nomination for The Night Heron and a BAFTA nod for Tomorrow La Scala!. The gang reunited for Shaun of the Dead—Jessica played Yvonne, Simon Pegg’s old school friend. These days, she’s mostly doing film work but still writes comedy, because of course she does. Total legend.

    • Trivia:

reference nShe’s got a full house with her husband, Adam Hynes—three kids running around, keeping life anything but boring. Their first, Gabriel Hynes, showed up in ’98, probably causing a whole lot of sleepless nights and baby photos. Five years later, Barbara joined the crew in 2003, just in time to make sure there was never a quiet moment. Then, rounding out the trio, Flora arrived in 2006. You can just imagine the chaos: homework battles, sibling squabbles, and the occasional family road trip that probably ended with someone threatening to “turn this car around.” Honestly, it’s one of those classic family lineups—one boy, two girls, each with their own quirks, probably driving Adam and his wife a little nuts, but in the best way. It’s the kind of household where you never know what’s going to happen next, but it’s never boring, that’s for sure.
