Joel Jr.
Joel Jr. isn’t your average filmmaker—this guy’s got a wild streak running through his projects. Take MST - Terra Prometida (2025), for instance. People are already buzzing about it, saying it blends razor-sharp social commentary with just enough sci-fi weirdness to keep you guessing. He’s not afraid to poke at big topics either. The film dives deep into the messiness of power and rebellion, but not in a preachy way. More like, he throws you in the middle of chaos and lets you figure out who the good guys are—if there even are any. You get this sense of unease, like the future he’s showing isn’t that far off from our own reality.
And then there’s Love Tricks (2014). Total gear shift. He’s got a knack for flipping genres on their heads. What starts out feeling like a straight-up romcom quickly swerves into darker, weirder territory. Characters make terrible decisions and sometimes you just want to reach into the screen and shake them. Joel Jr. clearly has a soft spot for flawed, messy people and he’s not afraid to make you sit with their awkwardness.
Overdrive (2015) brings a whole different vibe. It’s got this adrenaline-pumped energy, like the whole thing was filmed on three cups of coffee and a dare. The pacing is relentless, and you never really get a chance to catch your breath before the next wild turn. Joel Jr. pulls you along for the ride, no seatbelt, no apologies. If there’s a thread tying his work together, it’s that he doesn’t play it safe. Every story is a bit unpredictable, a little off-kilter, and honestly, that’s what makes his movies stick in your brain long after the credits roll.
