Nick Cassavetes
Nick Cassavetes basically grew up with Hollywood in his veins—his mom’s Gena Rowlands, and his dad’s John Cassavetes, one of those legendary Greek-American directors. As a kid, Nick popped up in his dad’s movies, like Husbands and A Woman Under the Influence, but at first, he wanted nothing to do with showbiz. Instead, he goes off to Syracuse on a basketball scholarship, thinking maybe sports are his thing. Then, bam, injury knocks basketball out of the picture. Suddenly, acting’s looking pretty good, so he heads to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, following right in his folks’ footsteps.
Nick’s acting credits are all over the place—think Face/Off, The Wraith, Astronaut’s Wife, Life, and a handful of others you might’ve caught on TV at 2 a.m. But directing? That’s where he really leaves his mark. He’s the guy behind The Notebook (yep, the one everyone sobs over), John Q, Alpha Dog, She’s So Lovely, My Sister’s Keeper, and more. He’s even dabbled in screenwriting—Blow, for example—and wrote the dialogue for Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around... Comes Around” music video.
On the personal side, Cassavetes married Isabelle Rafalovich, had two daughters (Virginia and Sasha), then later married Heather Wahlquist, who’s popped up in several of his films. Fun fact: his mom, Gena Rowlands, plays the older Allie in The Notebook, so the family’s all over that movie. Basically, Cassavetes is one of those guys who’s been everywhere in Hollywood, sometimes quietly, but always leaving a mark.
