Toni Collette
Toni Collette, honestly, what a total legend. Born in Sydney back in ’72, she actually started out as Toni Collett—dropped that extra “e” in later for a bit of flair, I guess. Childhood in the ‘burbs, nothing too wild, except for that time at eleven when she faked appendicitis so well that doctors legit took out her appendix. No joke. Girl was already winning Oscars in her own head.
She ditched school at sixteen and went straight to the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, but didn’t stick around too long before jumping into film. Her first big gig was in Spotswood, kicking off alongside Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins—no big deal, just casual movie royalty for your debut. Then came a Critics Circle Award for her stage work, and some wild dedication for Muriel’s Wedding—she put on forty pounds in seven weeks just for the role. That’s dedication or insanity, maybe both.
Hollywood came calling soon after, though her first lead in Diana & Me got totally overshadowed by Princess Diana’s actual death, which is just some heartbreakingly bad timing. But then, boom—The Sixth Sense. That’s where everyone really woke up to her. Academy Award nom, no less. She kept smashing it, with a killer performance in Little Miss Sunshine—just a perfect mix of heart and dysfunction.
She married musician Dave Galafassi, started a band, dropped an album, and even runs her own production company. Still lives in Sydney, got a spot in Ireland too. Collette’s one of those rare talents who just keeps moving—stage, screen, music, whatever. She’s never boring.
