Guru Nanak Jahaz

Storyline

Mewa Singh Lopoke, restless and fed up with the racism baked into early 1900s Canada, finds himself swept up in a wave of rebellion. He’s not alone—enter Gurdit Singh, a sharp, gutsy Sikh businessman with nothing but big dreams and even bigger guts. Together, they round up 375 hopefuls and set sail on the Guru Nanak Jahaz, which people would later call the Komagatamaru. Their plan? Crash through Canada’s so-called “direct voyage law,” which is basically code for “keep immigrants out.” But Canada’s not exactly rolling out the welcome mat. The whole trip turns into a tense standoff, all these passengers stuck on a ship, staring at the country they hoped to call home but can’t even step foot in. The real kicker? This isn’t just a story about a boat. It’s about the grit of people who refuse to swallow injustice, about the pain and hope tangled up in the immigrant experience. The Komagatamaru ordeal becomes a rallying cry—a messy, brave pushback against a world rigged against outsiders.
