September 27 – Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman sprains his right ankle while throwing a ground ball to second base and misses Thursday’s game in Los Angeles against the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers were up five runs midway through the seventh inning and ahead 5-2 when Freeman hit a grounder to right field. Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth intercepted the ball and threw to first baseman Luis Arraez, but the throw pulled Arraez off the bag.

Freeman sprained his torso while running to the bag, unsuccessfully trying to avoid a tag, and sprained his ankle after getting the out and falling to the ground.

Los Angeles won, 7–2, to clinch their 11th National League West title in 12 seasons.

Freeman is 1 of 4 this season, batting .282 with 22 home runs and 89 RBIs. The eight-time All-Star and 2020 NL MVP began his career as a .300 hitter over 15 seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2010-21) and the Dodgers hit .343 homers and 1,232 RBIs in 2,032 games.

Enrique Hernández replaced Freeman at first base in the eighth inning.
