Sept. 12 – Shohei Ohtani hit one of the Dodgers’ four homers in the first inning, Tommy Edman doubled in the game, and host Los Angeles beat the Cubs over Chicago 10–8 on Wednesday.
Edelman, Will Smith and Max Muncy hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning against left-hander Jordan Weeks, and the top-ranked Dodgers avoided a three-game sweep by the Cubs. Edelman hit home runs from both sides of the plate.
Ohtani, who also stole bases, hit 47 home runs and 48 steals and is on track to start the first 50–50 season in major league history.
The Cubs (75-71) tied the score at 7-7 on Cody Bellinger’s three-run homer in the fifth inning. The Dodgers (87-59) beat Sean Armstrong (3-3) in the seventh inning when Gavin Lux hit the game-winning hit.
Mets 6, Blue Jays 2
Francisco Lindor ends Bowden Francis’s no-hitter with his first home run, driving in six runs in the ninth inning to ignite New York’s win over Toronto.
Francisco Álvarez hits a three-run homer in the Mets’ explosive ninth, giving New York the rubber game in a three-game series with Toronto.
This was the second time in four games that Francis lost a no-hitter on his first home run in the ninth inning. The Blue Jays’ only no-hitter was pitched by Dave Stieb in Cleveland on September 2, 1990.
Sailors 5, Priests 2
Bryan Woo pitched a perfect seventh inning as Seattle defeated visiting San Diego.
The Mariners won for the fifth time in seven games, closing the gap to division-leading Houston in the American League West to 3 1/2 games. Wu’s perfect game, no-hitter and shutout were spoiled when Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a 1-0 fastball inside the left field foul pole with one out in the seventh inning. Wu (8-2) was charged with two runs on two hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Tatis homered for the Padres, who have lost for the fourth time in their last six games and are a half-game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks at the top of the National League wild-card standings. Padres starter Michael King (12-9) went five innings and allowed three runs — one earned — on four hits.
Phillies 3, Rays 2
One night after getting hit by a pitch and both benches being empty, Nick Castellanos got revenge on Tampa Bay, hitting a two-run homer and later setting up host Philadelphia as they won game three and took the lead.
Zach Wheeler (15-6) made his third consecutive start, going six innings for Philadelphia (88-58). Most of the damage was done by Jonathan Aranda, who had a double for the Rays (71-75).
The Phillies tied the game at 2-2 with a two-out walkoff single to Drew Rasmussen (0-1) in the sixth inning. Castellanos walked and advanced to third on a hit by Brandon Marsh. Weston Wilson then hit a slow grounder into no man’s land in left for an infield single that scored Castellanos.
Pirates 3, Marlins 1
Bailey Falter pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings to help Pittsburgh finish the season with a visit to Miami.
Falter (8-7) allowed only two hits after a hit in the seventh inning. The left-handed pitcher struck out five and walked three for the Pirates, who have won four consecutive and all seven games against Miami this season.
Jonathan Bermudez (0-1) made his first big league start after two relief appearances and allowed three runs and three hits in two innings with no strikeouts and one walk for the Marlins, who have lost three games in a row.
Nationals 5 games, Braves 1 game
Right-hander Jake Irvin continued to torment Atlanta and pitched six strong innings to help host Washington win the two-game series.
The loss leaves Atlanta one game behind the Mets in the race for the final wild-card spot in the National League. Washington beat the Warriors 8-5 to win the season series. Irvin (10-12) allowed one run on two hits, drove in four walks and struck out five. He didn’t allow a hit until Michael Harris II’s two-out double in the sixth inning.
The losing pitcher was Max Fried (9-9), who pitched six innings for the Braves, allowing four runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts and no bases allowed.
Tigers 7, Rockies 4
Trey Sweeney hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run first inning and host Detroit beat Colorado to extend its winning streak to four games.
Kerry Carpenter had four hits, scored a run and drove in another for the Tigers. Riley Greene had two hits, including a solo home run, and drove in two runs. Tyler Holton (6-1) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Jason Foley got his 22nd save with the final three outs, including two strikeouts.
Ezequiel Tovar drove in two runs and Ryan McMahon hit a solo home run for the Rockies. Starter Tanner Gordon (0-6) allowed seven runs, all on 10 hits, in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one but walked no batters.
Guardians 6, White Sox 4
Lane Thomas had three hits and drove in four runs, Austin Hedges hit a home run, and Cleveland beat host Chicago for its third consecutive victory.
Cleveland leads the Kansas City Royals by 4.5 games in the American League Central Division. The Guardians’ five pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts. The Cleveland bullpen contributed 4 2/3 innings of two-hit ball, and Nick Sandlin (8-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Chicago extended its franchise record home losing streak to 15 games. Chicago right-hander Davis Martin, who returned from 2022 Tommy John surgery in July, struggled in his shortest eight starts of the season. Martin (0-4) gave up five runs and struck out four on six hits in three innings, allowing one run.
Red Sox 5 games, Orioles 3 games (10 innings)
Tyler O’Neill hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning, his fifth in the last five games, to push Boston past Baltimore.
The Orioles (83-64) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning when third baseman Austin Slater singled off Emmanuel Rivera). Rivera hit his third home run and Anthony Santander hit his 41st for Baltimore, which has failed to score more than three runs in six of its last seven games.
Masataka Yoshida had two hits for Boston, which won twice in the three-game series. The Red Sox (74-72) won 12-3 on Monday and the Orioles won 5-3 on Tuesday.
Diamondbacks 14, Rangers 4
Eugenio Suárez hit two home runs, Randal Grichuk, Cotel Marte and Adrian del Castillo also hit deep, Phoenix sweep Texas State over Arizona State in two games.
Matte finished with three hits, including a double, and drove in four runs for Arizona (82-64), which has won three consecutive games, scoring in every inning except the third and recording a win against its opponent — the only one with a base hit in the game.
Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly allowed three runs on four hits with two outs in the fifth inning, struck out two and then exited the game with right hamstring cramps.
Yankees 4, Royals 3 (11 innings)
Chisholm Jr. tripled off pinch-runner Jon Berti in the bottom of the 11th inning to seal New York’s three-game series win over Kansas City in the rubber game at Yankee Stadium.
Juan Soto joins Aaron Judge (126) for the first time since Curtis Granderson, Robinson Canó and Mark Tesche in 2011. The first pair of Yankees teammates to score 100-plus RBIs in a season to accomplish the feat since Mark Teixeira.
Michael Massie homered and Tommy Pham went 3-for-4 for the Royals, who fell 4 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central. Kris Bubic (0-1) lost.
Giants 13, Brewers 2
Jerar Encarnacion, Mike Yastrzemski and Matt Chapman each led San Francisco with 17 hits as the team swept Milwaukee.
Blake Snell (3-3) bounced back from a poor outing over five innings and the Giants (72-74) moved to within one win of the three-game series. After Snell’s 1-2-3 pitch in the first inning, the Giants immediately attacked Brewers starter Colin Lehr, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings.
Rhea (12-5) allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in four innings for Milwaukee (83-62), walking one and striking out one.
Twins 6, Angel 4
Royce Lewis went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs as Minnesota beat Los Angeles in Minneapolis.
Brooks Lee also drove in two runs for the Twins, who won the rubber game of the three-game series. Matt Warner hit a solo home run.
Nolan Schanuel went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Angels. Tyler Ward and Jordin Adams also hit home runs.
Cardinals 2, Reds 1
Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI double in the eighth inning and Nolan Arenado hit a home run to help St. Louis defeat Cincinnati.
Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn allowed one run on five hits in five innings (73-72) in his first game back from the 15-day injured list. He struck out seven and walked one while reaching his 2,000th career innings.
Reds starting pitcher Brandon Williamson allowed one run on three hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked two. Buck Farmer (3-1) lost to the Reds (71-76), ending a three-game winning streak.
Track and Field 5, Astros 4
Kyle McCann hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to support Joey Estes, who helped Oakland beat Houston by pitching effectively in the seventh.
The Athletics erased an 0-2 deficit by scoring two points in the third quarter. Brent Rooker and JJ Bleday drove home Max Schumann and Ryan Noda, respectively. Rooker reached 100 runs this season with his run-scoring RBI single.
Jose Altuve, the Astros’ nine-time All-Star second baseman, left the game at the end of the fifth inning because of physical discomfort. The leadoff hitter went 0 for 3 and struck out in his final at-bat, during which he was injured.
