September 12 – Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton announces that he will retire at the end of the season.
Paxton, 35, started three games for the Red Sox after being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 26. Paxton, a British Columbia native, has been on the injured list since Aug. 12 after straining his right calf while trying to hit a base the day before against the Houston Astros.
“I hope we get in the playoffs and I get a chance to pitch again,” Paxton said Wednesday on host Rob Bradford’s “Baseball Is Not Boring” podcast. “But I think after this season I’ll retire and move on to the next chapter.
“It’s tough. Obviously, I think I can still do it. I can still go out there and help the team win. But I just think about where my family is and what they need right now and they need me at home and I feel like it’s my duty and responsibility to be with my family. I’m looking forward to being with my family and spending more time with them.”
Paxton appeared in 21 games for the Dodgers and Red Sox this season and compiled a 9-3 record with a 4.40 ERA.
His record is 73-41 with an ERA of 3.77 in 177 career starts with the Seattle Mariners (2013-18, 2021), New York Yankees (2019-20), Red Sox (2023, 2024) and Dodgers (2024).
