September 9 – According to multiple media reports, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott agreed on Sunday to a four-year contract extension worth $240 million, $231 million of which is guaranteed, making him the first-highest-paid player in NFL history.

The deal includes an $80 million signing bonus and will run through the 2028 season.

The average annual value of this contract is $60 million per season, which is more than $5 million per season more than Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals), Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Jordan Love (Green Bay Packers).

The news of Prescott’s new contract came just hours before Dallas’ season opener against the Cleveland Browns, which the Cowboys won 33–17. Prescott completed 19 of 32 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown.

“I hope after today we stop talking about (a new contract) and my wallet, I guess you could say,” Prescott said after the win over Cleveland. “It’s okay to move on and focus on this team and the success that we plan to have and that we’re working towards.”

This is the second high-profile move the Cowboys have made in a short time. They signed star CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million contract extension that includes a $38 million signing bonus, the largest ever for a wide receiver.

Prescott, 31, signed a four-year, $160 million contract in 2021, entering his ninth and final season.

Last season, he led the NFL in completions (410) and touchdowns (36). He threw for 4,516 yards in 17 games, helping Dallas finish the regular season with a 12-5 record.

Prescott, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has a 74-41 record in 115 career starts since being selected by Dallas in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has passed for 29,638 yards, 203 touchdowns and 74 interceptions.
