While many of us are still reeling from the recent presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump, it’s time to accept reality, the first (and possibly only) vice presidential debate between Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance is coming up. Below, learn everything you need to know about the upcoming clash between the two Midwestern lawmakers.
When and where will the debate take place?
The debate between Governor Walz and Senator Vance will begin on Tuesday, October 1 at 9pm ET in New York City. Walz has made it clear through X that he is ready to take on the challenge:
Who is hosting?
CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell and “Face the Nation” host and CBS News foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan will team up to moderate Tuesday’s debate. Hopefully the moderator during the Harris-Trump debate will be a star like ABC’s Lindsey Davis, but we’ll also be comforted by the fact that the participants will be able to debate each other.
What is the format of the debate?
Debate rules are still being negotiated, but Tuesday’s session will differ from the past 16 vice presidential elections in that both candidates will deliver their speeches standing rather than seated.
What issues can be discussed in the debate?
Walz and Vance are both fathers, which could spark a discussion about gender-affirming care for teens (Walz supports it but, surprisingly, Vance condemns it). While Vance, the veteran, for his part, may examine Walz’s war record, which he has publicly questioned in the past, we’re unlikely to get through the night without bringing up the issue of reproductive rights, a cornerstone of Harris’ and Walz’s campaign.
In preparation for Tuesday’s meeting, Vance has reportedly been working with a team of advisers that includes his wife, trial lawyer Usha Vance, and Tom Emmer, who has been with the court since 2015 and has represented Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District and served in the House of Delegates since 2023. Meanwhile, Walz tapped Transportation Secretary and one-time presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg as a stand-in for Vance.
