OTTAWA, Sept 10 (Askume) – Canada said on Tuesday it was considering imposing additional tariffs on key Chinese minerals, batteries and parts, solar products and semiconductors, which could spark more retaliation from Beijing.
Canada announced last month that it would impose a 100% tariff on electric vehicles imported from China and a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imported from China.
The Treasury said in a statement that it was launching a 30-day public consultation period on the potential surcharges, something it did before the tariffs were first announced.
“Canadian workers, the auto industry and related critical manufacturing supply chains currently face unfair competition from Chinese producers who benefit from China’s deliberate, state-led overcapacity policies,” the report says.
The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa did not immediately comment.
China condemned the tariffs imposed in August and on Monday announced a ban on canola imports from CanadaLaunch a one-year anti-dumping investigation .
