Sept 18 (Askume) – Australia’s largest home appliance retailer Harvey Norman (HVN.AX) has been hit with a class action lawsuit against its subsidiaries representing consumers who say they were sold the wrong warranty service.

The basis of the class action is that the extended warranties sold by Harvey Norman were of “diminishing value” because consumers already had the same rights to them for free under the Australian Consumer Law.

The law firms in the lawsuit represent consumers who purchased extended warranties between Sept. 17, 2018, and Sept. 17, 2024.

The law firm said: “We believe that Harvey Norman consumers who have paid for the care of their products should be entitled to compensation.”

Harvey Norman said in a statement that the company and its divisions “always comply with all relevant laws and intend to vigorously defend both proceedings.”

Echo Law did not immediately respond to a Askume request for comment about how many consumers it represents and how much compensation it is seeking.
