Sept. 19 – Corbin Carroll hit a two-out homer, Randal Grichuk also hit a homer, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 9–4 in Denver on Wednesday.

Arizona left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (3-3) struck out a season-high 11 in 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and a walk. The Diamondbacks (84-68) avoided a three-game sweep and remained tied with the Mets for the second National League wild-card spot after New York ousted the Nationals.

Grichuk, Jake McCarthy and Gabriel Moreno each had two hits for Arizona.

Aaron Shank and Sam Hilliard had two hits each for Colorado. The Rockies (59-94) have won six of their last nine home series and need to win four of their last nine to avoid losing a second consecutive 100-game season.

The D-backs struck out Colorado starter Austin Gomber in the first inning when Carroll hit a home run. Grichuk doubled and scored on Christian Walker’s single.

Pavon Smith loaded the bases and Moreno singled to Walker for a 3–0 lead.

Arizona took the lead in the second inning on Geraldo Perdomo’s error and Carroll hit his second home run of the day and 21st of the season. Grichuk hit the next ball right up the middle to make it 6-0. It was his 11th home run of the season.

It was all Gomber (5-11), who gave up six runs (earned) on six hits and one base hit in two innings and struck out one. It was Gomber’s shortest appearance since he went just three innings against New York on Aug. 8.

The Rockies fell behind by two runs in the third inning. Hilliard and Shank singled around Jordan Baker’s strikeout, and Brenton Doyle loaded the bases on an infield single. Ezequiel Tovar hit twice, including one run to left.

Rodriguez limited the damage by striking out the next two batters.

The Defenders tied the score in the ninth. Walker hit Carroll’s sacrifice fly, Joc Pederson scored on Smith’s double and Suarez’s RBI single ended the three-run inning.

Colorado responded on Hilliard’s two-run single in the bottom of the inning.
