BRUGES, Belgium, Sept 19 (Askume) – Club Brugge admitted they faced a difficult match in the Champions League on Wednesday as they missed early chances and lost at home to Borussia Dortmund.

He believes the 3-0 scoreline is in favour of the German club, who finished runners-up in last season’s final, and that they missed a chance in the first game of the new group stage.

Brugge were the better team until the 76th minute at the Bredelstadion but then Dortmund substitute Jamie Gittens scored twice and a penalty was awarded, which Sergio Guerrese scored.

“We played good football, created chances and didn’t concede any for an hour,” goalkeeper Simon Mignolet said.

“But in a game like this you have to make the most of your opportunities. If we were ahead we would have had more chances to fight back. But that didn’t happen.”

“Dortmund also have a very big squad and it’s a tough game. When they bring in new players – top talent – you have a tough time.”

“It’s definitely an issue,” said Capt. Hans Wicken.

“We played very well in the 75th minute and made the most of the chances. Unfortunately, we failed to score.”

Coach Nikki Hayne said she had mixed emotions. “In terms of the end result, it’s pretty bad,” she told reporters.

“But my feeling about the first 75 minutes was positive. We put Dortmund in trouble and I’m happy with the way we performed.”

He said, “If we do the same next time, we can win points anywhere. But we have to learn to take advantage of our chances and we did not do that.”

Before the game, Hein said the Belgian champions are aiming to make the Top 24 under the new format, which would take them to the knockout rounds in February.

Their next Champions League match will be against Sturm Graz in Austria on October 2.
