STOCKHOLM, Sept 19 (Askume) – The U.N. advisory body on artificial intelligence released its final report on Thursday, making seven recommendations to address risks and governance shortcomings related to artificial intelligence.

The United Nations established a 39-member advisory body last year to address the issue of international governance of artificial intelligence . The recommendations will be discussed during a UN summit in September.

The advisory body called for the establishment of an expert group to provide unbiased and reliable scientific knowledge about artificial intelligence and to address information asymmetry between artificial intelligence laboratories and the rest of the world.

Since the release of Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022, the use of artificial intelligence has spread rapidly, raising concerns about the spread of misinformation, fake news, and copyright-infringing content.

Only a few countries have enacted laws to control the spread of artificial intelligence tools. The European Union is ahead of other countries in passing a comprehensive AI bill compared to the US’s voluntary compliance approach , while China aims to maintain social stability and state control.

On September 10, the United States and nearly 60 other countries signed the ” Action Blueprint to Manage the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Military “.

The United Nations said in a statement that as the development of artificial intelligence (AI) is in the hands of a few multinational companies, there is a danger that it could be imposed on people without their having the right to make any decisions regarding the technology.

It also recommends a new policy dialogue on AI governance, including the exchange of AI standards and the creation of a global AI capacity development network to improve governance capabilities.

Among other recommendations, the UN wants to establish a global artificial intelligence fund to address gaps in capabilities and collaboration. It also advocates the establishment of a global AI data framework to ensure transparency and accountability.

Ultimately, the UN report proposes the establishment of a small AI office to support and coordinate the implementation of these proposals.
