Askume, Sep 19 – Former Sri Lanka Test batsman Duleep Samaraweera, who played cricket in Australia for 20 years, has been banned for “inappropriate conduct” with female players, Cricket Victoria (CV) said on Thursday.

Askume could not immediately contact Samaraweera, 52, for comment.

Samaraweera played seven Test matches and five ODIs for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1995 and coached women’s teams in the southern Australian state of Victoria, including the Melbourne Stars WBBL team.

Cricket Australia said in a statement that its Conduct Committee found that Samaraweera had breached CA’s Code of Conduct and barred him from holding any position with CA or Australia’s state and territory associations.

CV. Support this decision.

“We believe this behaviour is completely reprehensible and betrays everything we stand for at Cricket Victoria,” Cricket Victoria chairman Nick Cummins said in a statement.

“The victims in this case showed incredible strength of character and courage to speak out.

“He will have our continued support to achieve his goals on and off the field.”
