Sept 19 (Askume) – US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris will join celebrity billionaire Oprah Winfrey on Thursday in an online event with grassroots groups to garner support in battleground states.

The “Unite for America” event, co-organized by Winfrey and activist group Win With Black Women, aims to register voters and support voters in states Harris is representing, including Pennsylvania, Georgia and Michigan.

According to local media reports, Harris and Winfrey will broadcast the event live on social media including Instagram and TikTok at 8 p.m. ET (0000 GMT) in Michigan, where Harris is campaigning in the Detroit area.

Dozens of grassroots groups are involved, including Latinos for Harris, Blacks for Victory and Republicans for Harris. Win With Black Women is an ongoing campaign to get black women into elected office. Harris is black and of South Asian descent.

A press release from Unite for America says the advocacy group has helped Harris raise more than $20 million in campaign funds since her candidacy in July.

Winfrey, a businesswoman, philanthropist and former television host, said in a statement: “The most important thing to me is to inspire people to vote and make sure everyone can vote not only for themselves but for their family and friends.”

In a recent Askume poll, Harris led her Republican rival Donald Trump 47% to 42%.

According to an average of polls by aggregator FiveThirtyEight, Harris is ahead in battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada and North Carolina, while Trump has more support in Georgia. They are tied in Arizona.

Trump will attend an event to combat anti-Semitism in Washington on Thursday and speak at the Israel-America Council summit.

Hours after President Joe Biden endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee, 90,000 Black women participated in a conference call hosted by Win With Black Women that raised $150 million in three hours , the release said.

In August, Winfrey lobbied for Harris at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

“I urge all of you independent and undecided voters,” Winfrey said, later describing herself as an independent, “to make sure that in 2024, decency and respect prevail.”
