Sept 19 (Askume) – Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday issued a warning to any would-be burglars: “If anyone comes into my house, they will be shot.”

The Democratic presidential candidate and gun owner made the offending remarks in front of a live studio audience during an interview with Oprah Winfrey when the topic turned to gun laws.

“I probably shouldn’t say that,” Harris said, laughing. “But my staff will think about it later.”

Heavily guarded by the US Secret Service, Harris cast her vote for Republican rival Donald Trump in the November 5 presidential election .

Trump favors some restrictions on weapons and ammunition, while Harris supports a ban on assault weapons, stricter background checks for gun buyers and “red flag” laws under which people deemed dangerous could be temporarily banned from obtaining firearms.

Harris told Winfrey that she supports the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protects the right to bear firearms.

Harris mentioned gun ownership while she was a U.S. senator in 2019 and also mentioned it during her debate with Trump last week, seemingly in an effort to appeal to more conservative voters.

A White House source previously told Askume that Harris owns a handgun for personal security reasons and keeps it in a safe at her California home. The source declined to reveal the make of the gun but said it was the same gun Harris mentioned during the 2019 campaign.

“I am a gun owner, and I own guns because a lot of people own guns — for personal protection,” Harris, the former San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, told reporters in 2019. “I was a professional prosecutor.”

According to the Pew Research Center, one-third of Americans own guns and about two-thirds of Americans overall support stricter gun laws, with nearly 90% supporting policies that would prevent mentally ill people from owning guns.
