A photo showing US President Joe Biden wearing a “Trump 2024” hat at a 9/11 commemoration event has been shared on social media, misleadingly claiming that the president “endorses” Republican Donald Trump.

“BREAKING NEWS: In an unexpected turn of events, President Joe Biden endorses Donald Trump for President. Make America Great Again,” was the caption of a Threat DS post , which shared a photo of Biden standing in a small crowd, wearing a red hat and smiling. Read: “Trump 2024.

The Trump campaign shared the same photo with an X on it with the caption: “Thanks for the support, Joe!”

Biden announced his support for Vice President Kamala Harris after she dropped out of the presidential race in July and has not changed his stance since.

The moment occurred on September 11 during Biden and Harris’s visit to several 9/11 sites , when Biden had a relaxed conversation with a man from the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department in Pennsylvania.

An interactive video showed Biden handing a “presidential hat” to a man wearing a Trump hat at a fire station. Biden signed the blue hat held out for the man. When asked to wear a Trump hat, he said, “I wouldn’t go that far,” but smiled and put the hat on, prompting applause from the crowd.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a September 13 press conference that Biden “handed the president’s hat to a person wearing a Trump hat.” Then, “in return, that person said that in the same spirit, the president should wear his Trump hat. So the president’s speech was very brief.”

Context is missing. Photos show Biden briefly wearing a Trump hat during a casual conversation with a man in Pennsylvania. That does not mean he endorses Trump.
