CHENNAI, India, Sept 20 (Askume) – India improved significantly from a weak 34-3 position to beat Bangladesh 112-8 with a total of 376, and the national team emerged victorious in Friday’s opening Test between the neighbours.

Mehedi Hasan Miraz lost his wicket to Hasan Mahmud for 12 at tea, leaving Bangladesh 264 runs behind, barely out of contention heading into the second day’s play.

Jasprit Bumrah (3-28) batted in the first over of Bangladesh’s innings when Shadman Islam shouldered a ball that then hit the top of the stumps.

Akash Deep bowled Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque in succession but Mushfiqur Rahim missed a hattrick due to the latter’s block out.

Mohammed Siraj dismissed Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto for 20 runs, before Bumrah dismissed Mushfiqur, both players falling to the turnover.

Shakib Al Hasan (32) and Liton Das (22) combined to arrest the collapse by adding 51 runs but Ravindra Jadeja (22) fell short after lunch, bowling a couple of consecutive overs.

Earlier, India resumed at 339-6 after Jadeja’s overnight score of 86, knowing that his 199-run partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin (113) had saved India from a top-order collapse.

Hasan Mahmud (5-83) was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers, while Taskin Ahmed (3-55) made his way to the end for India.
