CHENNAI, India, Sept 21 (Askume) – India set Bangladesh a mammoth target of 515 but were bundled out for 158-4 on the third day of the match against their neighbours on Saturday.
Bengal started well but some smart catching from India and three wickets from home hero Ravichandran Ashwin stunned the tourists.
Captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto (51) and allrounder Shakib Al Hasan (5) were in the middle when bad light interrupted the innings with Bangladesh still needing 357 to win.
Earlier, Shubman Gill made an unbeaten 119 and Rishabh Pant (109) hit a hundred in his comeback Test before India declared the second game at 287-4.
The hosts are in a strong position after taking a 227-run lead after beating Bangladesh by 149 runs in the first innings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Gill showed his positive intent when the dashing right-hander completed his half-century by smashing two sixes in an innings.
Pant took the more conventional approach of hitting a single off the spinner to improve on his fifty in his first Test since his horrific car accident in late 2022.
Bangladesh missed a chance to get into the stands when Shanto dropped Pant on 72.
To rub salt to the wound, Pant smashed four consecutive boundaries off Shakib in the left-arm spinner’s next over before dismissing Gill to bring up his hundred.
Pant hit 13 fours and four sixes in his sixth Test century before being caught by Mehidy.
Gill’s fifth Test century included 10 fours and four sixes, but he could not be dismissed.
Facing a tough challenge in the second innings, Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan (33) and Shadman Islam (35) decided to fight back with a 62-run partnership.
Yashasvi Jaiswal took a brilliant left-handed catch at slip to dismiss Zakir and then Ashwin struck a hundred in the very first over to take the decisive wicket of the match.
Gill and KL Rahul were caught by Shadman and Mushfiqur Rahim respectively, while Mominul Haque was dropped at mid-stump by a clever spinner.
As wickets kept falling, Shanto played his naturally aggressive game and brought up his half-century with his third six over the fifth over.
