Sept. 23—The Cincinnati Reds fired head coach David Bell on Sunday night with just five games remaining in the 2024 season.

Cincinnati bench coach Freddy Benavidez will serve as interim head coach.

“David has provided the stability our club needed over the last few seasons,” Reds president of baseball operations Nick Kroll said. “We feel we need to make a change in order to be a big league team. We are not having the success we expected and we need to start thinking about 2025.”

Bell, 52, signed a three-year contract extension with the club through July 2023, a deal that will keep him in Cincinnati through the 2026 season.

In six seasons (2019-24) coaching the Reds, Bell led the team to a 409-456-win record. Cincinnati has made the playoffs once during Bell’s tenure — during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

The Reds have a record of 76 wins and 81 losses and have missed the playoffs. They begin a two-game series against the host Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday.
