Sept. 24—San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave has partially torn the triceps muscle in his right arm, coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday, requiring surgery that could end his season.

Hargrave was injured during San Francisco’s 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

“It’s a huge (loss),” Shanahan said. “I thought (Sunday) was his best game. I thought he was a big factor and he really impacted the quarterback in that game. … He’s one of our better players. One.”

Shanahan said it’s possible Hargrave could return, but not until after the playoffs.

Hargrave, 31, has a sack and seven tackles in three games (all starts) for San Francisco this season.

Meanwhile, Niners quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with back pain. An MRI showed nothing serious and Shanahan said the 24-year-old Bullock is taking his recovery day by day.

Through San Francisco’s first three games, Purdy has completed 72.6 percent of his passes (69 of 95) for 842 yards, four touchdown receptions and one interception.

Christian McCaffrey has yet to play a game for the 49ers this season after the star running back traveled to Germany over the weekend to meet with specialists as he battles Achilles tendonitis, Shanahan said Monday.

McCaffrey has been on injured reserve since Sept. 14. Jordan Mason has taken over the RB1 spot in McCaffrey’s absence and has rushed for an NFL-high 324 yards and two touchdowns on 67 carries through the first three games.

The Niners (1-2) will face the New England Patriots on Sunday in Santa Clara, California.
