Askume, Sep 24 – A detachment of warships from the Russian Pacific Fleet and the Chinese navy entered the Sea of Okhotsk in the western Pacific as part of a joint naval exercise, Russia’s Interfax news agency said on Tuesday, citing the Pacific Fleet’s press department.

“During the sea voyage, the detachment with the participation of deck helicopters performed such tasks as joint maneuvers, collisions with simulated enemy unmanned ships, reconnaissance and monitoring of the surface situation,” Interfax quoted news reports as saying.

Russia said on Saturday it is launching the joint Russian-Chinese “Northern/Interactive-2024” naval exercises, which will involve air defense and anti-submarine weapons.

Russia’s large anti-submarine destroyers Admiral Panteleyev and Admiral Tributs, as well as frigates MPK-82 and MPK-107 and other warships took part in the exercise, according to the Interfax news agency.

China dispatched the destroyers Xining and Wuxi, the frigate Lincang and the comprehensive supply ship Taihu, the agency said.

“(The ships) will conduct artillery fire under a single plan and use anti-submarine and anti-aircraft weapon systems,” the Interfax news agency reported.

The Sea of Okhotsk is located in the western Pacific Ocean, bordered by Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula to the east, the Kuril Islands to the southeast, and Japan’s Hokkaido to the south.
