Sept 25 (Askume) – Vietnamese President Do Lam promised to expand the country’s semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries at a meeting with top U.S. companies in New York as the country seeks more investment from technology firms and other American companies.

This is Carrie Lam’s first visit to the United States as President of Vietnam.A meeting with US President Joe Biden is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

Lam held meetings with several US companies, including technology companies Apple (AAPL.O) and Meta (META.O) and financial firm Blackstone (BX ).

Carrie Lam, the head of Vietnam’s most powerful Communist Party, plans to meet with Google later on Wednesday , a person familiar with her plans confirmed to Askume last week.

In a meeting with Lam on Monday, Meta’s president of global affairs Nick Clegg shared plans to produce virtual reality glasses in Vietnam, according to a Vietnamese government portal.

Meta, which has millions of Vietnamese users on Facebook social media, did not respond to a request for comment.

At a separate business forum, Lam signed cooperation agreements with US companies on energy, artificial intelligence and data centres, the government said .

Other participants include representatives from technology company Amazon (AMZN.O) , payments company Visa (VN) , consumer products multinational Procter & Gamble Co (PG.N) and energy company AES.N.

Ted Osius, chairman of the US-ASEAN Business Council, an advocacy group that co-sponsored the event, told Askume that Lam “has made it clear that throughout her tenure as president and secretary-general, she will push technology to grow and move the economy forward.”

In a meeting with US companies, Lam said Vietnam sees digital transformation as a driving force to lead the country into a new era, according to a government portal.

“Developing the semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries … is a strategic choice and priority,” Lin said.
