CHENNAI, India, Sept 28 (Askume) – A fire broke out at a Tata Electronics factory in southern India that mainly makes Apple iPhones, and firefighters were trying to extinguish the blaze, two people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

Tata Electronics said in a statement that it is investigating the cause of the fire and will take necessary measures to protect the interests of employees and other stakeholders.

“An unfortunate fire incident occurred at our factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Our factory’s emergency response plans ensured the safety of all employees,” a Tata Electronics spokesperson said in a statement.

A person with direct knowledge of the incident said production had been halted and workers sent home because of a fire in a section of the factory. He described the fire as “chemical-related”.

A fire official said a building of the factory collapsed due to the fire but there were no reports of any casualties.

A fire official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media as time was needed to control the fire that broke out in the morning in a chemical storage area.

J. Saravanan, the district’s senior industrial safety officer, said officials were investigating the cause of the fire. “We cannot go in right now because the roads are destroyed. It will take a day to cool down,” he told Askume.

According to The Hindu, more than 10 fire and rescue vehicles are working hard at the spot to control the situation.
