September 29 – St. Louis Cardinals reliever Matthew Liberatore hit a two-out bunt off Brett Wisely in the eighth inning and went wild. The ground out crossed first base, allowing Tyler Fitzgerald to score from first base, giving the San Francisco Giants a 6–6 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Liberators struck out the first two homers to tie the game at 5–5 before Fitzgerald was hit on an infield hit that hit his left shin.
After a brief delay to make sure the left-hander was OK, Wisley launched a strike between the mound and third base. The pitch to Liberatore (3-4) was fast and clean, but his off-balance throw went to the right of the target and ended up in foul territory down the right field line.
Fitzgerald ran from first, barely beating out a power pass from Cardinals right fielder Jordan Walker.
Ryan Walker (10-4) got the win by pitching two-outs on second and third to preserve the tie in the top of the eighth inning. Rookie Spencer Bivens earned his first save in a scoreless ninth after giving up a single in the first to Thomas Saggese.
The Giants looked dominant and took a 5–2 lead into the seventh quarter before the Cardinals fought back to tie the game. Brendan Donovan’s two-run double brought St. Louis within one run, then Walker welcomed Giants’ fifth pitcher Tyler Rogers with an RBI single.
After Paul Goldschmidt’s sacrifice fly opened the innings in the first half, the Giants scored two runs in the first inning on Lamont Wade’s RBI single and an error by Cardinals shortstop Marcin Winn, and then scored two more runs in the fourth inning on Lamont Wade’s RBI single.
The two teams exchanged one run each in the fifth and sixth innings, with the Giants entering the eighth inning with a 5–2 lead.
Giants starter Tristan Baker allowed just one run and four hits in the first four innings. He walked two and struck out three.
The Cardinals’ Andre Palant lasted five innings, during which he was charged with four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He struck out four without issuing a walk.
Bailey had two RBIs and Matt Chapman had a double and scored twice for the Giants (80-81), who kept alive their hopes of a .500 season.
Goldschmidt and Donovan each had three hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals (82-79), Winn drove in two runs and Pedro Page and Alec Burleson had two hits each.
