Oct 3 (Askume) – New Zealand Rugby is seeking more information from global governing body World Rugby after France’s unilateral decision to exclude some national team players from next year’s test series against the All Blacks.
The French Rugby Football Union said this week that players involved in the previous 14 finals would not be selected for the 2025 and July 2026 internationals as part of an agreement with domestic leagues over player availability.
The decision is in violation of World Rugby’s Rule 9, which states that players must be available for selection during international windows.
All of this ensures that France will travel to New Zealand with a weakened squad on next July’s tour, as France’s key players are in the Top 14 for June’s playoffs.
New Zealand Rugby said it was aware of the French rugby union’s plans to manage player welfare but was “surprised” by the announcement.
“We are seeking further information and clarification from World Rugby and the French Federation to better understand the situation,” NZR said.
A World Rugby spokesman said Regulation 9 and its Test selection window were “clear” but declined to comment further.
France has previously sent reduced-strength teams to Southern Hemisphere countries for mid-year trials without publicly stating its selection preferences.
The agreement between the French Rugby Football Union and the Top 14 organisers also includes clauses relating to the availability of players for the Six Nations.
However, the policy prioritises Test selection over the responsibilities of the Top 14 clubs during the Northern Hemisphere Championship.
