ABUJA, Sept 9 (Askume) – Nigeria’s national security services on Monday arrested the president of the country’s largest labour federation on unknown charges, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said.

Joe Ajero was arrested just days after he criticized the government for raising gasoline prices by 39% and threatened to go on strike if the decision was not reversed. High gas prices were one of the reasons for the cost-of-living protests in early August .

DSS did not have any immediate comment on the issue.

Analysts say the latest hike in the price of gasoline, which is widely used by small businesses and homes to generate electricity, could further fuel inflation already reaching double digits , worsening economic hardship.
