September 9 – The Houston Rockets announced on Monday that Carroll Dawson died at the age of 86.

No other details of his death were released.

“The Rockets family mourns the passing of beloved former coach and general manager Carroll Dawson, affectionately known as ‘CD,'” the Rockets said.

He served as an assistant coach in Houston from 1980 to 1997. During his tenure as the Rockets’ general manager from 1996 to 2007, the Rockets compiled a record of 461 wins and 409 losses and appeared in the playoffs six times.

“CD has been a cornerstone of our organization for nearly three decades, playing a major role in shaping the careers of stars like Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. As proud as Dirk, a Houston native, CD is the only coach to appear in all four NBA Finals in Houston, including Grady, who also coached the four-time WNBA champion Houston Comets.

Dawson served as the head coach of his alma mater, Baylor University, from 1973–77 and compiled a record of 44 wins and 51 losses.
