WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Askume) – The U.S. Commerce Department said on Monday it is proposing detailed reporting requirements for developers of advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing providers to ensure these technologies are secure and reliable against cyber threats.

The proposal would require the federal government to report on the development of “cutting-edge” artificial intelligence models and computing clusters proposed by the Bureau of Industry and Security.

It also requires reporting on cybersecurity measures and the results of so-called red team efforts, such as testing dangerous capabilities, including the ability to assist in cyberattacks or develop chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapons.

External red teams have been used for years to identify new cybersecurity risks , a term dating back to American Cold War simulations in which enemies were called β€œred teams.”

Generative artificial intelligence β€” which can create text, photos and video based on open-ended prompts β€” raises both excitement and concerns that it could render some jobs obsolete, influence elections and threaten to overpower and destroy humans.

The Commerce Department said the information collected under the proposal is “critical to ensuring that these technologies meet strict security and reliability standards, are resistant to cyberattacks, and are not at risk of exploitation by foreign adversaries or non-state actors.” The practice is limited.

In October 2023, President Joe Biden signed an executive order requiring developers of artificial intelligence systems that pose a threat to US national security, economics, public health or safety to test security test results before releasing them to the public. Government stake.

This rule would establish reporting requirements for advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models and computing clusters.

The regulatory measure comes as legislative action on artificial intelligence remains stalled in Congress .

Earlier this year, the Bank for International Settlements conducted a pilot survey of AI developers. The Biden administration has taken a number of steps to prevent China from using US technology in artificial intelligence as the sector’s rapid growth raises security concerns.

Top cloud providers include Amazon’s (AMZN.O) AWS, Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Google Cloud and Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) Azure unit.
