MONROVIA (Askume) – Forty-seven inmates escaped from a maximum-security prison in Liberia’s Margibi County, the Justice Ministry said on Monday.

The ministry said preliminary investigations revealed that the prisoners managed to escape over the weekend by breaching the prison’s security system.

“The Department of Justice is deeply concerned about this incident and is taking all necessary steps to capture the fugitive,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

The ministry said it had deployed more police officers to assist in the search for the prisoners and urged the public to remain calm and report any information that could lead to the capture of the prisoners.

It called on the fugitives to surrender before the nearest police station or prison authorities to avoid facing additional charges.
