Sept 9 (Askume) – The United States made no concessions to Nicaragua last week in exchange for the release of more than 100 political prisoners, an official said on Monday.

“There were no exchanges or concessions made,” Eric Jacobstein, deputy assistant secretary for the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, said at a news conference.

Jacobstein said the government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega imprisoned its citizens for political reasons and urged the president to release them.

He did not say how many political prisoners the United States believes remain in Nicaragua.

Last week, the United States released 135 political prisoners from Nicaragua and transported them to Guatemala, where they will remain until they can apply for immigration to other countries.

In recent years, Ortega’s government has repeatedly deported people it deemed opposed to the government.
