10 September – On Monday, French women Clara Burel and Diane Parry successfully advanced to the second round of the Tunisia Jasmine Open.

Burel, seeded second, defeated Spanish player Marina Bartholz Ribera 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. Burel hit 7 aces, saved 5 of 7 break points and converted 5 of 6 break points.

Third seed Perry defeated Tunisia’s Chiraz Beschari 6-3, 6-0 in just over an hour. Perry converted five of six break points to win the final nine games of the match.

It won’t be easy for eighth seed Anna Blinkova of Russia. She lost 6-4, 6-4 to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tomo, with Blinkova scoring only 18 of 38 points (47.4%) on her first serve.

Other first-round winners include Eva Liss of Germany, Yuriko Miyazaki of Britain and Mai Motorama of Japan.

Guadalajara Akron Open

Seventh-seeded Russian Veronika Kudermetova beat American opponent Sakia Vickery 6-4, 6-4 at the first WTA 500 tournament in Mexico.

Vickery, ranked 160th in the world, hit five aces but also committed six double faults. Kudermetova saved five of eight break points against Vickery and converted all five break opportunities.

In another loss for the Americans, Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki beat Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-3. Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, lost in the first round for the fourth consecutive time, including this year’s US Open.

In addition, Colombia’s Camila Osorio, Russia’s Kamila Rashmova and Mexico’s Renata Sarasua also won their first round matches.
