Sept 10 (Askume) – US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump took the stage on Tuesday night for their first and only presidential debate ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

Here are some key quotes:

economy

“Look, our economy is in bad shape because of inflation, and it’s actually called nation-destroying,” Trump said.

“People can’t go out and buy cereal or bacon or eggs or anything else. They’re definitely going to die because of what people have done to our country. They destroyed the economy,” Trump said.

“I believe in the ambitions, the aspirations and the dreams of the American people, and that’s why I conceived of and actually developed a plan to build what I call the opportunity economy,” Harris said.

“My opponent, on the other hand, plans to do exactly what he has done before: give tax cuts to billionaires and large corporations,” Harris said.

Israel and the Gaza Conflict

“This has to end immediately, and the way it ends is we need a ceasefire, we need the hostages released,” Harris said.

Trump said: “She hates Israel. If she were president, I believe Israel would not exist in two years.” Harris responded: “That’s simply not true. I’ve supported Israel and the Israeli people my entire career and life.”

world leader

“World leaders are laughing at Donald Trump,” Harris said.

“(Hungarian Prime Minister) Viktor Orban said the most respected and most feared person was Donald Trump. When Trump was president, we had no problems,” Trump said.

Ukraine

Asked if he wanted Ukraine to win a war with Russia, Trump said, “I want the war to stop. I want to save lives.”

“If Donald Trump had been elected president, Putin would be sitting in Kiev right now,” Harris said.

UnitedABS

“Wait a minute, I’m talking right now, if you don’t mind, does this sound familiar?” Trump said during the 2020 vice presidential debate, referring to Harris’ meeting with former Vice President Mike Pence (Pence). Pence used the phrase “I’m talking to.”

“It’s important to remind the former president that you’re not fighting Joe Biden; you’re fighting me,” Harris said.

“So she started saying she was going to do this, she was going to do that, she was going to do all these wonderful things. Why didn’t she do that? She’s been there for three and a half years,” Trump said. Harris delivered the closing remarks.

Abortion

“I promise you that when Congress passes a bill that restores the protections of Roe v. Wade for the president of the United States, I will proudly sign it,” Harris said.

“Right now, I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother…Now the states are voting on it…Every state is voting. It’s the people’s vote…” Trump said. “…It’s no longer about not being tied to the federal government.

passengers

“Let me tell you, he’s going to talk a lot about immigration tonight, even though it’s not the topic that’s being discussed,” Harris said.

“Our country is failing. We are a failed country,” Trump said, referring to people entering the country illegally.

Assassination attempts

“I probably got shot in the head because of what he said about me,” Trump said.

Truth

“As I said, it’s not a surprising fact that you’re going to hear a lot of lies,” Harris said.

After Harris said she would sign a national abortion ban bill if she won the election, Trump said: “She’s done it again. It’s a lie.”

Joe Biden

“Remember this, she’s Biden. She’s trying to get rid of Biden,” Trump said of Harris.

“Obviously, I’m not Joe Biden and I’m certainly not Donald Trump, but I am providing a new generation of leadership for our country,” Harris said.

gun

“They’re planning on confiscating everybody’s guns,” Trump said.

“(Democratic vice presidential nominee) Tim Walz and I are gun owners. We’re not taking away anybody’s guns,” Harris said.

January 6, 2021, Capitol attack

When Trump was asked if he regretted anything that day, he said, “I had nothing to do with it, except that they asked me to give a speech.”

“I was at the Capitol. I’m the vice president-elect. I’m also a senator on the day when the president of the United States incited a violent mob to attack and desecrate our nation’s Capitol,” Harris said.

coronavirus disease

“But let’s talk about what Donald Trump has done during COVID-19 and really thank President Xi Jinping,” Harris said.
